National Indigenous Peoples Week celebrations - South Zone

LETHBRIDGE – As part of our celebrations for National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is inviting the public to join us for a week of events from June 18 to 24 which celebrate and recognize the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. 

Outdoor events will include the raising of the Blackfoot Confederacy flag at three AHS sites. The flag will then be flown on special dates throughout the year.

This is an opportunity to learn about and inspire each other, to celebrate Indigenous people and take personal action to support reconciliation – something we should strive to do every day. It is also an important part of AHS’ continuing efforts to enhance an inclusive healthcare system that is welcoming and respectful of all cultures, traditions and beliefs. 

AHS has been celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Month with virtual and in-person events taking place across the province since the start of June.

Activities in South Zone

Cardston

Saturday, June 18, at Cardston Health Centre, 144 2 St. W.

• 11 a.m. – Tipi raising and blessing from Indigenous Elder

Monday, June 20, at Cardston Health Centre, 144 2 St. W.

• 9 a.m. – Opening blessing and raising of the Blackfoot Confederacy flag
• 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. – Various activities including rock painting, hand games, internal organs and anatomy teaching, story telling
• 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Traditional food lunch
• 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. – Dance demonstrations
• 1:30 p.m. – Closing ceremony

Pincher Creek

Wednesday, June 22, at Pincher Creek Health Centre, 1222 Bev McLachlin Drive

• 10:30 a.m. – Opening Smudge ceremony and blessing
• 11 a.m. – Raising of the Blackfoot Confederacy flag

Lethbridge

Thursday, June 23, at Chinook Regional Hospital Auxiliary Building, 17 St. S.

• 9 a.m. to noon – Opening blessing and raising of the Blackfoot Confederacy flag
• Noon – Traditional food lunch
• 1 p.m. – Drummers and dance demonstration

Friday, June 24, at Galt Gardens, 601 – 3 Ave. S.

• 1:30 to 3 p.m. – Horses in the park event will feature a spirit horse painting. Bannock and tea will be provided
